1999 – Sunset Blvd

Miami, Los Angeles, 1999. The Sunset Blvd series with its numbered Rooms tackles the disenchantment of multiple encounters, attempts to find a soulmate as fleeting as they are fanciful. A dark subtitle, “Who’s next?”, reduces the image of Michelangelo’s David to a representation of an archetypal and artificial figure of male seduction. Fragmented, reflected, mise en abyme… sublime beauty is lowered to the levels of cinema or night- club decor. Beside graffiti by Keith Haring, tagged on worn out walls, David becomes a shadow, an object of consumption, a sex symbol crossed by a barcode.  Suzanne Rivier
