1998 – United colors of…
United Colors of… features volumes reminiscent of fractured shells or missiles, with brightly coloured interiors. These fragments of earth bear the colours most frequently used on the world’s flags (the use and choice of tones, and their symbolism, vary according to the image the country wishes to convey). The volumes are positioned according to 4 martial formations, whether attacking or defending.
In fact, the colours are there as decoys. Evoking the idea of a gathering through their variety and number, they draw the eye towards them like flags do, and distract our minds from the underlying meaning of their presence: in this case, warlike conquest, and in the advertising that the title paraphrases, profit.
Installation presented at the bienal ‘Barro de America’, Museo Otero, Caracas,Venezuela, 1993
